When I consider what JOSHUA mean to me personally and the gift it is to my congregation I think primarily of three things:
JOSHUA's contribution to local ecumenism.
JOSHUA is an ecumenical, inter-faith, inter-religious organization. In an era where there is so much division among groups, JOSHUA focuses on how we can come together. As people of faith, and as human bneings, it is essential that we find ways to come together in common cause. By focusing on what binds us together, we can work to build up the human family and those in need; to make our local community and the world a better place for our children, our families, and all our brothers and sisters.
JOSHUA emphasizes building relationships.
We are the family of God, but so often we don't take the time to get to know the members of our family. Through teaching a technique known as one-on-ones, JOSHUA enables members to sit down with others and form relationships in an ever-widening circle. In JOSHUA, members gradually build relationships within their congregations, with other congregations, with people of need, and with people in power. In a period of history where people feel increasingly alienated from each other and from government, JOSHUA empowers people to know each other and support each other.
JOSHUA provides tools to get things done.
JOSHUA helps translate our concerns and issues into action that can bring about positive change. Through monthly training meetings, clergy caucuses, board meetings, and leadership training opportunities, JOSHUA helps member congregations stay connected. Through this on-going networking and training, JOSHUA empowers and equips congregations with tools and techniques to bring together the relationship they have built and be a voice and participant in the public arena.
